In 2010, DEPPRO was approached by Tony South from Paraplegic Benefit Fund (PBF), to help the Gregg family from Queensland with major home renovations to convert their garage into accommodation for their wheelchair-dependent children and complete bathroom modifications.

The Gregg family is in the unfortunate position of having two of their children diagnosed with Batten’s disease. Batten disease is an inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills.

Club Cares was invited by the PBF and DEPPRO to assist the family with the home modifications with a donation of $40,000. With DEPPRO’s initial generous donation of $20,000, the family were able to begin renovations. In 2012, Club Cares and DEPPRO were again able to assist the Gregg family with a donation of $5,000 for Callan to travel to the USA for specialist assessment of his suitability to participate in a medical drug trial for juvenile Batten’s disease.
